Dasaratha, the king of Ayodhya, had three wives. Kausalya, Sumitra, Kaikei. No one had a son.

One day, Shravana's son is carrying his elderly and blind parents on a trip to Kashi, where they are thirsty and stop to rest.

Then Shravan leaves their parents for water and goes to a riverbank. Suddenly an arrow comes and strikes the listener with a loud growl. Then Dasharatha gets there. Shravan then tells his story to Dasharatha and dies.         

Dasharatha then takes the water from the pot and gives it to Shravan's mother's father, puts it on his shoulder and continues the journey to Kashi in silence. While Dasharatha was carrying Kavadi, Shravan's mother became suspicious of Dasharatha's height and asked Dasharatha where my son was. Then Dasharatha says, "Mother, I am Dasharatha, the king of Ayodhya. I went hunting in the forest, Then I hear a noise in the bushes and I did shoot an arrow with demonstrating sound education and it hit your son and he died. The heart of those parents is filled with sorrow when they find out his story and tell you that I came to you. Then those parents will curse that you will die with the same suffering that we are experiencing. That curse will bring both happiness and suffering to Dasharatha. He has an unknown idea of ​​whether he will be happy that he will finally have a son or whether he will die of grief. The sages think that Putrakameshti should be sacrificed as per the advice of the royal priest or vashisht brain to that kingdom.

అయోధ్యకి రాజుఐన దశరధుడికి  ముగ్గురు భార్యలు.  కౌసల్య, సుమిత్ర, కైకేయి. ఒక్కరికి కూడా పుత్రప్రాప్తి కలగలేదు. 

ఒకరోజు శ్రవణ కుమారుడు తన వృద్ధ మరియి నేత్రహీనులుఐన తల్లితండ్రులని కాశి  యాత్రకి కావడిలో కూర్చో పెట్టి  మోసుకెళ్తుండుగా  వారికి దాహం వేసి ఒకచోట విశ్రాంతి కోసం ఆగుతారు.

అప్పుడు శ్రవణుడు నీరు కోసం వాళ్ళ తల్లితండ్రుల్ని విడిచి ఒక నది తీరమునకు వెళ్తాడు. హఠాత్తుగా ఒక బాణం వచ్చి శ్రవణుడికి తగులుతుంది దానితో గట్టిగా ఒక కేక వేస్తాడు. అప్పుడు దశరధుడు అక్కడికి వస్తాడు.  అప్పుడు శ్రవణుడు తన కథను దశరధుడికి చెప్పి మరణిస్తాడు.

అప్పుడు దశరధుడు ఆ కుండలో నీరు తీసుకు వెళ్లి శ్రవణుడి  తల్లి తండ్రులకి ఇచ్చి, కావడిని భుజం మీద పెట్టుకుని మౌనంగా  కాశీ యాత్రను కొనసాగిస్తాడు. దశరధుడు కావాడిని మోస్తుండగా, శ్రవణుడు తల్లికి దశరధుడి ఎత్తు వల్ల  అనుమానం వచ్చి దశరధుడును నా  కొడుకు ఏక్కడ అని ప్రశ్నిస్తుంది. అప్పుడు దశరధుడు ఇలా చెప్తాడు, అమ్మా నేను అయోధ్యకి రాజు అయిన దశరధుడుని.అటవికి వేటకి వచ్చాను అప్పుడు పొదలలో ఎదో శబ్దం వచ్చి శబ్దబేరి విద్యను ప్రదర్శించి బాణం ప్రయోగించను అది మీ కుమారుడికి తగిలి అక్కడే  మరణించాడు. అతని కథ తెలుసుకుని నేను మీ వద్దకు వచ్చాను అని చెప్పగానే ఆ తల్లితండ్రుల హృదయం దుఃఖంతో నిండిపోతుంది. అప్పుడు ఆ తల్లితండ్రులు మేము ఏ బాధ అయితే అనుభవిస్తున్నామో  అదే బాధతో నువ్వు మరణిస్తావు అని శపిస్తారు. ఆ శాపం వాళ్ళ దశరధుడికి ఆనందం బాధ రెండు వస్తాయి. ఎట్టకేలకు పుత్రప్రాప్తి కలుగుతుంది అని ఆనంద పడాలో లేదా పుత్రశోకంతో మరణిస్తాను అని బాధ పడాలో తెలియని ఆలోచనలో ఉంటాడు. ఆ రాజ్యనికి రాజ పురోహితుడు అయినా వశిష్టుడు మెదలు అయినా ఋషులు సలహా మేరకు పుత్రకామేష్టి యాగం చెయ్యాలి లని అనుకుంటారు.
